The National History Challenge for Australian students is a nation-wide History program that involves students in researching some aspect of their past.

The Simpson Prize

Simpson 2010 – Question:
“Are there voices missing from the Anzac Legend?”
In your response, choose ONE or TWO groups of people whose contributions you consider have not been sufficiently commemorated and give reasons, supported by evidence, for your judgment.

Responses can either be a 900-1200 word essay or a 15 minute audio-visual presentation.

To enter, you will need to submit 3 copies of each entry along with the official coversheet to your state co-ordinator before 11 December 2009.

The historyfaculty.com is a joint venture of the School of History, University of Leeds and PearsonGraphics.co.uk (County Durham). The History Faculty is bringing together leading university lecturers to build a library of accessible and authoritative audio and video podcast study guides for teachers, students, and those who just love history. Each podcast consists of an approximately 30 minute lecture that presents a clearly structured overview of the issues it addresses. The podcasts can be downloaded to mp3 and mp4 players, mobile phones and computers, so viewers can learn what they want, where they want and when they want. ABC's History Under Siege

ABC’s “History Under Siege”

Recently ABC Radio National’s “Hindsight” program commenced broadcast of a four-part series entitled “History Under Siege”, which discusses the role of the historian and the tensions and debates of history.

A feature website is available where all the programs will be available to stream or download once they have been broadcast.

Designing the Gallery of Australian Democracy (GOD) for Teachers and Students

The Australian Government recently committed to the ‘Gallery of Australian Democracy (GAD)’, a multimillion dollar new initiative at Old Parliament House. As a first step to producing an educational resource of excellence, Old Parliament House has commissioned a survey of teachers’ ideas about GAD.

The Civics and Citizenship Education website

Australia’s pre-eminent civics and citizenship education web portal. This website contains resources, information, activities and links for teachers, students and parents involved in civics and citizenship education.

Department of Veterans’ Affairs

As part of the Australian Government’s Commemorations program, Saluting Their Service, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs produces a range of resource material for schools and has established links with national and state curriculum authorities and teacher associations to ensure that the material meets required standards.

Fordham University

This site from Fordham University provides a huge range of primary and secondary sources, from modern to ancient history on line. It also includes activities which assist students to check the authenticity of documents and generally apply their historical skills. It is well worth a look.

History Channel Classroom

The site provides television programs that middle school, junior high and high school teachers can videotape and keep for up to a year – along with support materials to help with lesson plans and class activities.

Historical Maps

The site from the University of Texas allows you to obtain an amazing range of historical maps.

Middle Ages

This site for the lower secondary school is inspired by ‘The Western Tradition’ video. Menu allows access to various aspects of medieval life and there are links to primary sources. Refer to review in Education Queensland’s Education Views June 12 1998 for further details.
